Chapter 4: Orthodox and Recalcitrant Seeds

The seeds of many species cannot be classified as orthodox, and this is particularly so in the case of tropical tree seeds. The views presented here favor a continuum of seed behavior that is based on a variety of characteristics. A suite of mechanisms or processes is discussed that embodies the properties currently thought to promote the acquisition of desiccation tolerance and to ensure survival of the desiccated condition in orthodox seeds
